Problems that often bring expectant and new parents into therapy include, but are not limited to:

  • Depressed mood

  • Uncontrollable crying

  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness

  • Intense anxiety

  • Flashbacks or re-experiencing of previous stressful events, including sexual abuse experienced as a child  or difficult delivery 

  • Inability to sleep

  • Irritability and anger

  • Intrusive and upsetting thoughts

  • Distressing thoughts about hurting or killing yourself or the baby (If you believe you might harm yourself or anyone else, please seek immediate help by calling 911 or going to your nearest emergency room)

In rare cases, a mother may experience postpartum psychosis.  For more information on this serious illness, click here.
